The SUDAS Design Manual Chapter 5, Section 5L-4: Driveway Design Criteria and Division 7, Section 5L-4: Driveway Design Criteria specifications are adopted by ordinance for all driveway construction. All permanent driveway approaches shall be constructed to SUDAS design standards and specifications referenced in this chapter. When the city code is in conflict with Statewide Urban Design and Specifications (SUDAS), the city code will prevail.

(1) Modification and Added Additional Requirements. The city of Ida Grove has modified and added additional requirements where warranted in regard to residential driveway approaches which are as follows:

(a) The maximum residential driveway approach width at the curb line, curb cut or street edge shall be 42 feet. The curb or street shall not be disturbed or removed for a distance greater than the length allowed during construction except with the approval of the street superintendent; this width of the finished curb opening for permanent driveway approach includes the ends of the required radius or taper on each side of the driveway.

(b) The approach radii or taper included in the approach opening shall be three feet minimum to five feet maximum for residential driveway approaches and shall have their termination point at the street upon the curb and their termination point included in the length of the curb opening.

(c) The maximum width of a residential driveway approach may be greater than the 24 feet specified in SUDAS if allowing access to more than a two-car garage. This modification may be of an additional 11 feet to 35 feet but in no case shall the maximum width of 30 percent of the property frontage of any parcel of land.

(d) A curb opening shall not be established beyond the property line extended at any location except where joint driveways are constructed across a property line to serve two adjoining properties or one property and an alley. Such joint drive approaches and curb cuts shall be considered as a single approach, and the driveway approach shall conform to this section.

(e) A curb opening shall not extend closer than 48 inches to a drainage intake unless the intake can be located entirely within the driveway approach. If the drainage intake falls within the curb opening, it shall be reconstructed at the permittee’s expense and in accordance with city specifications and instructions.
