If any member of the city council misses four or more city council meetings (including regular, special or any other meetings) in any period of 12 consecutive meetings, the city clerk shall present the information on said absences to the city council. After receiving said report, the city council may, but is not required to, direct the city clerk, with the assistance of the city attorney, to present a written charge against such councilmember for removal from office, pursuant to Iowa Code Section 66.29, and the council shall set a hearing on said removal. Notice shall be provided to the city councilmember at least five days prior to the hearing, and said notice shall be personally delivered. At the hearing, the city council may consider any reason for the absences, including illness or medical reasons for the councilmember or family, funerals and out-of-town business, and may vote to remove, or not remove, the councilmember. This section does not limit the council’s authority to remove a member for less than four absences. This section does not limit the council’s authority to remove a councilmember under Iowa Code Section 66.29, for any other reason or using any procedure. [Ord. 512 § 1, 2007; Code 1975 § 1-3.0307.]
